Senior Centers for the new Millennium...

Too often people think of senior centers only as places to go to play bingo. Today, older people are more likely to come to our senior centers for yoga, investment seminars, aerobics, legal clinics, job interviews, Spanish classes, computer training or live musical and dramatic performances. Seniors are redefining the ways in which we think of aging and are using senior centers to find new ways to stay involved with friends, both old and new, and to remain actively involved in the community.

Senior Services, Inc of Grant County operates four multi-purpose senior centers throughout the County including: Silver City, Santa Clara, Cliff-Gila and Mimbres. Each is managed by a full-time center director, and each offers its own mix of educational, recreational, cultural, physical fitness and health-related activities. These activities and their schedules are published in the Senior Services monthly newsletter or can be reached by clicking on each center’s monthly calendar. All the centers are handicap accessible.

All four Senior Centers and the Hurley Meal Site, serve congregate meals during the lunch hour five days a week at a nominal cost, where people aged 60 and over can enjoy good food and good company. Participants receive a nutritious noon meal and have the opportunity to socialize and make new acquaintances. Meals require reservations. To find out how to make a reservation, call the specific Center you plan on visiting.

Popularly known as "Meals-on-Wheels", this federally funded service is a national program administered locally to deliver well-balanced, lunchtime meals to frail, homebound individuals who are at least 60 years of age. Elders are asked to make a $2.25 donation per meal to help underwrite a portion of the cost of the meal. These meals are prepared at the Senior Center closest to the client and delivered by volunteers.
