~ Our Foster Grandparents Program ~

FGP Mission, Goals, & History

The Foster Grandparent Program... is designed to engage low income elders to provide supportive, person-to-person quality time to children having exceptional or special needs while enriching the lives of the volunteers.

The Foster Grandparent Program has provided valuable aid to children with particular needs.  Foster Grandparents serve an average of twenty to thirty hours a week and receive hourly stipends. Foster Grandparents must be 60 or older and meet established income eligibility guidelines.  In addition to the stipend, they receive accident, personal liability, excess automobile insurance coverage, and assistance with the cost of transportation, an annual physical examination, and recognition.

Foster Grandparents serve in Elementary Schools, Head Start Schools, and Child Care Centers.  Among their diverse assignments, Foster Grandparents help children one-on-one with staying on task, reading, writing, motor skills, adjusting to classroom settings, family style eating, numbers, colors, and shapes.  When in Child Care Centers they comfort, feed, and hold babies.  Foster Grandparents are never left alone and are under the supervision of the classroom supervisor.
