Manuel and Alicia first became involved with the Senior Programs in May of 1990. They were instrumental in getting the Hurley Meal site organized by becoming members of the Board of Directors. With the help of then Hurley Mayor Dave Diaz, and board member Manuel Martinez, the site became a reality. With the location established and key volunteers in place, they began serving meals on October 31, 1990.
The meals were initially served three days a week, with the food being transported from the Santa Clara Senior Center. Many of the volunteers transported the food in their own vehicles. Silver City merchants donated all the paper goods that were needed, and clean-up of the building was done by Manuel and Alicia with help of other volunteers.
They were also instrumental in organizing parties and decorating the hall for special occasions. Potluck brunches were then held once a month, with many area seniors attending. The Hurley Meal site would not have become a reality if it had not been for the numerous people involved.
Manuel and Alicia wish to thank Hurley Mayor Ray Baca, the Council and the Staff for all the help given to the Hurley Seniors.
Manuel and Alicia Carreon will be celebrating their 57th wedding anniversary on November 25, 2007. They have one daughter, one grandson, and their pride and joy… a great grandson. They enjoy traveling and visiting with their family. They also enjoy dancing and just being together. Their greatest joy is being able to help other people like their church and community.
Special thanks to Loretta Martinez, Santa Clara Senior Site Manager for the help and support.
